African American and African Studies: Article Databases

Other Avenues to Articles

Here are several other databases that you might search. I strongly recommend you search first in America: History and Life, but the following are other choices for you to find scholarly articles.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar sometimes picks up the odd bit of scholarship.

Click here for a brief tutorial of how best to use Google Scholar.

Best Journal and Newspaper Databases

There is a classic print index for African American studies:

Index to Black Periodicals
A 13 .O4 (Reference Collection)
This annual index has had other titles (including Index to Periodical Articles by and About Negroes), and it indexes articles from approximately 35 African American scholarly and popular journals. All information is indexed in a single alphabet, including authors, subjects, personal names, and cross-references. There is a list of the journals indexed in the front of each volume.
