Apps and Mobile Sites: Going Mobile

Whether on or off campus,

it is possible to use mobile devices to do research efficiently and effectively with these mobile apps.

Most library databases and ejournals are licensed for current WMU students, faculty, and staff only.  Database and journal publishers often determine your access rights based on the IP address of the device you are using to access their site.

In order to use the library databases correctly on your mobile device, you will need to properly authenticate it.  Even though these are all free apps, you may need to create an account on iTunes or in Android Market when necessary.

  • Some publishers use your WMICH email as your authentication.
  • Other publishers require you to create a personal account from an on-campus computer before accessing the mobile site. Your login credentials then become your username and password for the mobile app or site.
  • Some publishers use device pairing, usually by sending you an authentication email after you log in to the site. Pairing may expire after 6 to 12 months, after which you would need to pair your device again.

Read the instructions for each app carefully and be sure to ask us if you have any questions about access.
