Due to rising costs and relatively low usage, the WMU Libraries have decided not to renew the subscription to RefWorks when it expires June 30, 2017. This guide gives information on this transition and assistance for current users to migrate their data to an alternative system. Users have 18 months past this date to contact ProQuest, who can extract the data in RIS format.
We are recommending either Mendeley or Zotero as excellent options for current users of RefWorks. There may be other options users may consider as well. Use the links below to get to more information on each system, tutorials, videos, and migration information. Directions are available on each page for exporting database from RefWorks into one of these recommended systems.
Why are the WMU Libraries not renewing access to RefWorks?
Price increases for the RefWorks subscription, as well as decreasing usage in recent years have caused us to reconsider the value of the service. We believe there are free alternatives which are excellent replacements for RefWorks, and even provide additional functionality.
When does the RefWorks subscription end?
Our current subscription to RefWorks ends June 30, 2017.
Can I export my citations out of RefWorks?
Yes, you can export your RefWorks database as a citation list, tabbed format, or XML format. If you are migrating to another citation management system, you can also export your database into the specific format used by that system.
What alternatives are there for RefWorks?
Mendeley and Zotero are two excellent alternatives that we are recommending. Information on both of those systems can be found on the linked pages from this guide. Other citation management packages are EndNote, Papers, ReadCube, and others. Microsoft Word also includes some functionality for managing references.
Is there a simpler alternative to RefWorks for smaller projects?
Sometimes you may just need correct formatting for a citation, or a few citations. A citation generator can help with the correct formatting of citations in well known basic styles and allow references to be copied and pasted into a bibliography. Recommended citation generators are listed in the Citing Sources guide.
What happens if I don't get my citations out of RefWorks before June 30?
Users have 18 months past this date to contact ProQuest, who can extract the data in RIS format.
I am an alum. Will I lose access to my RefWorks account?
Yes, after June 30, 2017 you will lose access to your account and your citations. You must export your database from RefWorks before that time.
