Using Mendeley

This guide provides instruction and resources for using the Mendeley bibliographic citation management software to keep track of your citations, create bibliographies and collaborate with other researchers.

Mendeley technical issues

Mendeley Desktop and Mendeley Reference Manager both have significant technical issues which are affecting WMU users. The WMU Libraries has stopped recommending Mendeley to new users until these issues are resolved.

We recommend that new users download Zotero instead.

Current Mendeley users may continue using Mendeley as usual, and WMU Libraries will continue to provide research support.

To learn more about these issues, visit the Known Issues page on this guide.

Mendeley Reference Manager - Major Issues

Mendeley has recently pushed out a new version of Mendeley Desktop called Mendeley Reference Manager. This is a new platform, not an update of Mendeley Desktop. Read about it and download it here: https://www.mendeley.com/reference-management/reference-manager

The new Mendeley Reference Manager program has a number of issues with working with Microsoft Word. The add-in to Word is very difficult to install. There are numerous complaints about Mendeley Reference Manager and the Mendeley Cite add-in in the Microsoft AppSource store. It is not recommended that users install Mendeley Reference Manager at this time. You are either better off installing Zotero OR installing the old Mendeley Desktop software, still available here.
