The 2020 and 2021 sessions of the SEMINAR High School Music Camp at Western Michigan University included an elective course called Exploring Diversity of Composers. In this course, students endeavored to work together to create an online guide to information available online and locally about a group of composers selected from the Composer Database of the Institute for Composer Diversity, to learn about composers from traditionally underrepresented groups, meaning demographic groups other than white males. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the SEMINAR Music Camp was held online in 2020. In both 2020 and 2021, the camp was was held for one week. In past years, under more normal circumstances, the SEMINAR Music Camp was held in person for two weeks. Due to limitations of time and availability of local information resources, the four students in the course worked exclusively with online resources in 2020. In 2021, students had the benefit of some resources that were available on campus. This exhibit represents the group of composers chosen by the students, with their choice of information they and the instructor found notable as found in the online sources consulted. We hope that you will use the information you find in the exhibit to broaden your listening horizons and to seek out music by composers you haven't heard before.
The course was held from July 20 to 24, 2020 and July 19 to 23, 2021, Michael Duffy, Fine Arts Librarian, instructor.
