Chicago Style Citations

Book

Last name, First name. Title of Book. Edited by First name Last name. Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication.

Book Chapter

Last name, First name. “Title of Book Chapter.” In Title of Book. Edited by First name Last name Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication.

Journal Article

Last name, First name. “Title of Article.” Journal Title volume number, no. # (Year): page numbers. DOI or permalink.

Newspaper Article

  • If the name of a newspaper begins with “The,” this word is omitted.
  • Newspapers not from a well-known US city should include a city name with a state abbreviation in parentheses after the city name.

Last name, First name. “Title of Article.” Title of Newspaper (City, ST), Mo. Day, Year. Permalink.

Thesis/Dissertation

Last name, First name. “Title of Paper.” Master’s thesis or Doctoral dissertation, University Name, Year.

Video

Last name, First name or Username of poster. “Name of Video.” Name of Website. Month Day, Year. Video, length. Link.

 

General Notes

  • What to include:
    • Include as much information as possible.
    • Only include the information that is included on the source itself. If it is missing information that has to be looked up somewhere else to find it, do not include it.
  • Multiple Authors
    • Name of authors are in the order they appear
    • If there is more than one author, only the first author’s name is inverted (Last, First) for the bibliography
    • Always use “and” for multiple authors
  • Links
    • DOI’s are in the form of a link (https://doi.org/#######)
    • If there is no DOI available, use a permalink from the website, database, or Library Search
    • Use a regular URL as a last resort
  • Miscellaneous Formatting
    • Each citation should have a hanging indent of half an inch
    • If there is a quote within a title, use ‘ ‘ instead of “ “
      • Example: “‘Anyone Who Calls Muse a Twilight Band Will Be Shot on Sight’: Music, Distinction, and the ‘Interloping Fan’ in the Twilight Franchise”
    • If there is no date, put n.d.
