The Map Department offers a custom mapping service to all University faculty, staff, and students. University community members may collaborate with the Maps Coordinator to create maps to include in journal articles, dissertations and theses, or other research projects. Members who are proficient in ArcGIS may make an appointment to use a computer with the software. Please contact the Maps Specialist with questions.
Photographing. Visitors may photograph materials with the permission of Maps Staff on duty. Use of natural light is preferred. Special arrangements can be made for the circulation of maps to meet special copying needs. Maps from the historical collection can not usually be copied. On rare occasions, permission to copy these maps may be given by the Librarian on duty, on a case by case basis. The decision will be based on need, and the size, condition and date of the map.
Equipment. A light table is available for tracing maps or assisting in reading cluttered or extremely detailed maps.
Reference services. Staff is usually available to assist patrons during regular hours. Reference questions may be phoned in to 269-387-5047 or e-mailed through the library's Ask a Librarian. While the library staff are able to answer ready reference questions, patrons with more in-depth questions will be asked to come into the library.
Library instruction & workshops. Staff are available to instruct classes and groups in the use of the collections, and interpretation of cartographic materials.
