Program Examples

Description: Series of 6 hybrid mini sessions on skills to improve engagement with information skills. High concept topics in easy-to-understand language, demystifies cultural expectations for academic writing, reading, research. Provides, real world skills students can apply immediately. Student Cohorts: TRIO, CAMP, first year students, ELL, students with executive functioning disorder. Offered extra credit Threat: Flight, Freeze, Fawn Pedagogy: To build Confidence. Blended learning, Active learning Outcomes: Student will have a stronger sense of their scholarly identity through improved academic and information literacy. Assessment: Do they feel more connected to their academic identity and the community? Do they feel like they belong in the library and on campus. Takeaway: Identify campus partners who can inform you on the needs of students. I consulted the office of student disability services and drew from my training and experience as an ESL teacher.

Description: Soanti procrastination cafe cial study hall atmosphere to help students set academic goals. Students state a goal when they enter and tell me how offer I am to motivate them. If they complete their goal, they get a prize. Study alone together, with food, therapy dogs, prizes. Self-paced study hall with presence of faculty and staff for support. Student Cohorts: AD/HD, ADD and other Executive Functioning Disorders, students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, students with anxiety, depression, or isolation. Offered extra credit. Threat: Flight Pedagogy: To build Belonging Connectedness through differentiated learning, personalized learning/ game-based learning Outcomes: Students develop time management skills and develop study strategies while connecting with faculty, staff, and students. Students connect to new peers and library staff. Assessment: Do they feel more confident about their ability to complete their work? Do they feel more connected to people and spaces in the library and on campus? Do they have a more positive outlook (belonging) about their identity as a student? Takeaways: Identify campus partners who can inform you on the needs of students. I consulted the office of student disability services, student counseling services, feedback from students, my experience with two children with ASD.

amazing library raceDescription: Scavenger hunt for first year students. Students complete a scavenger hunt in teams to discover library resources, spaces, and services. Winning team gets a prize. Get them acclimated to library within first few weeks of the semester to prepare them for more in-depth library support later Student Cohorts: First year students, transfer students, international students Threat: imposter syndrome, stereotype threat, emerging adults Pedagogy: Game-based learning, student-led learning, priming Outcomes: Students discover services that they can use later. Students connect with other students and broaden their social group. Assessment: Do students find value in what they discover and the process they discovered it Takeaways: The social aspect of this event is the most important aspect of this event followed closely by discovering resources like study rooms.

Midweek art breaks Description: Painting, collaging, activity with therapy dogs. Partner with therapy dog clinic on campus and the Office of Health Promotion and Education (trained counselors who provide guided reflective conversations), and the Counseling Center. Low commitment environment, social in nature, but in the libraries as a break from studying. Student Cohorts: Students who might be experiencing homesickness, anxiety, depression, isolation. Threat Freeze, Flight, Fawn Pedagogy Belonging, Confidence, Connectedness Individualized/personalized learning Outcomes: Students will experience stronger connections to campus resources. Students are confident in managing their emotional needs. Students are more in touch with their social, emotional, and educational identities. Assessment: Do they feel more grounded and connected to services in the library and on campus? Takeaways: Invite campus partners like counseling services, therapy dogs, and health promotion and education (sexperts).

waldo fest Description: Tabling event that brings 40-50 student success offices to Waldo Library for on-demand help. Library has multiple tables. Enticed by prizes, games, food. Student Cohorts: All undergrads Threats: Flight, Freeze, Fawn Pedagogy: Game based learning, Student-led learning Outcomes: Students connect to new services. Students identify the library as a place to broaden their campus community and connect to student services in a central location. Assessment: How many people visited a table? How many follow-up appointments were made? Takeaways: Mental health services table are the most visited tables by a substantial. Develop a stronger partnership with them.
